The music of the David Wax Museum is a rhythmic stew of American and Mexican folk traditions, with a dash of Eastern European influence mixed in. It’s an inventive blend of piano, horns, guitars, violin, accordion, upright bass, and some traditional Mexican instruments into an energetic and charming style. David Wax and Suz Slezak form the artistic core of the David Wax Museum and, together with multi-instrumentalist Greg Glassman, fuse traditional Mexican folk with American roots and indie rock to create a Mexo-Americana aesthetic.

Silverplatter was able to conduct a brief phone interview with lead singer and keyboard master Ben Thornewill from Jukebox the Ghost. Read on to learn about their recent adventures, then go buy yourself a ticket to their show here in Phoenix at Crescent Ballroom taking place tomorrow evening!

Silverplatter: What’s your craziest audience experience?

Ben Thornewill: Well just recently we played a big outdoor show in Louisville out by the water and it was great, and then out of nowhere a couple of guys in pig costumes showed up dancing, and I invited them up onstage for the song “Schizophrenia”. Just these crazy pigs up on stage dancing. Even after the show they came up and said “hi” and never broke character, I thanked them all for staying in pig costumes and they were like “what are you talking about” like nothing had happened.

Sp: What’s your favorite part about touring?

BT: I mean it’s really about the shows. Going back to places you’ve been before and playing for bigger audiences. It’s a simple answer: it’s about playing the shows for people. There are some really difficult things about being on the road but the shows make it worth it.

Sp: I would like you to finish the sentence: If I could dance like Beyonce, then I would….?

BT: (Whilst laughing) That’s the whole sentence right there! If I could dance like Beyonce then I would! All the time. That’s the answer. If I could dance like Beyonce then I would all the time.

Sp: Is there a sort of common thread present throughout all of your albums?

BT:  Well, no. I mean the common thread is us as musicians and songwriters I think. There’s not some three album overarching goal, or agenda, or theme. I think we’re passionate enough doing pop music with some musical and emotional depth to it and hopefully that goes throughout all three records. But beyond that, there’s no agenda. Every record is us writing from a different time in our lives and a different place that’s filled with different people. Each one really occupies its own space but at the center of it, it definitely just is the three of us.

Sp: Coming off of that, do you feel that your newest album Safe Travels displays more maturity than your past albums?

BT: Yeah I mean we’re dealing with deaths, and breakups, and moving, and things that we’ve often thought about but haven’t dealt with head on, either in our lives or in our music. You get all of that on this record.

Sp: Is there anything you would like your Arizona fans to know about your show?

BT: that it’s going to be awesome! Please come out, it’s going to be a rock show. Be crazy!
